Thelma Watters, Garda Inspector
Thelma Watters started taking Business Studies at college and she worked briefly in Human Resource Management, but it was not for her. Instead she applied for An Garda Síochána, and started her first post in Limerick city in 2001. By 2016 she was promoted to Garda Inspector.
Teresa Hudson, Firefighter Paramedic
Teresa loves both the challenge of her work, and also the complete unpredictability that each shift brings. Although it can be gruelling; both physically and emotionally, nothing beats the feeling of knowing she has helped bring a life into the world or saved one from leaving.
Nicky Hughes, Pilot
Nicky always had an interest in aircraft and flying as a child. She knew when she finished school that she wanted to be a pilot. After finishing university, Nicky began her flight training in Dublin and completed her private pilot’s licence.
Vivienne Barry, Chief inspector, Dublin Bus
Vivienne is the first female Chief Inspector in The Dublin Bus. One of the most rewarding moments of her job in 2016 was being part of the Dublin Bus Recruitment Day for Women.
Deirdre Sinclair, Bus Driver
Deirdre loves the freedom she gets driving around the city in her work. No two days are the same. Her route covers the Zoo and Phoenix Park, and though people often ask her if she gets bored driving the same route all the time – she doesn’t. Deirdre loves Dublin at all times of year. With her regular passengers, she likes that she has become part of people’s daily routine.
Kathryn Brown, Truck Driver
Kathryn grew up on a farm, and was driving tractors from the age of six. However, after she got married, she spent the next twenty years juggling family and work as a chef, until her ‘midlife crisis’ hit and she realised that she needed a change of career. As a truck driver she is living the dream.
Lisa Levins Burgess, Navigator, RNLI Lifeboat Service
As a child in Clogherhead, Lisa Levins Burgess would hear the maroons – noisy flares announcing the launch of the lifeboat – and go with her parents to the beach to watch the rescue set out. She always admired the crew and wanted to join “but there were no girls”. Undaunted, in 1995 she became the first woman to join the crew in Clogherhead and today she is a navigator for the station.
