Róisín de Buitléar, Glass Artist

roisin.jpg

Róisín is an internationally renowned artist working in large scale glass installation and sculpture since 1982. She studied Glass Design at the National College of Art and Design, Dublin, where she later taught for two decades in tandem with her professional practice. Spanning sculpture, design, architecture and sound, her artwork is represented in national and public collections in Ireland, Britain, Japan, China and the USA. She was Invited Artist In Residence at the National Museum of Ireland in 2018 and since 2020 she is holding a position of the Chair of the Glass Society of Ireland.

For her, the alchemic qualities of glass are a constant fascination. She strives to capture the qualities of glass, both as a molten syrup and as a hard material, reflecting and refracting light shadows. Róisín is also inspired by both of her parents, noble guardians of our culture and community. Her practice focuses on culture, identity and legacy. The characteristics of our narrative traditions are central to her work. Made up of multiple layers of meaning, her work comes from very deep within her soul. And when she is not working, she is dreaming up her next project or travel plan.
