Marie Mulhall, Mechanic
Marie has been working with cars since she was seventeen. Even when she was a little girl, she often helped her father repairing cars and bikes. He wasn’t a trained mechanic but liked to work on all kinds of vehicles. She particularly remembers him being able to turn a bike from a bare frame to a beautiful-looking machine. When she finished school and began her career as a mechanic, it never occurred to Marie that it would be a big deal, or that people would make assumptions about her when they saw her in overalls with dirty hands. It was simple. She wanted to learn more about something that fascinated her – engines. She also wanted to make her father proud. Getting a paid apprenticeship was just a bonus.
Women are more than capable of being taught any trade or profession we choose. We may not be as physically strong as some men but our brains can learn the same skills we need to progress.
