<image:title>A Woman's Work Project - Liz Nugent, Novelist - Liz Nugent is a bestselling novelist, born in Dublin. She is the author of four crime fiction novels. Her last one Our Little Cruelties published in 2019, was listed by the New York Times as one of 7 recommended thrillers of 2020. At the age of six, Liz suffered a brain haemorrhage after falling down the stairs at home, and lost all coordination in her right hand. Although this means that Liz takes longer than most people to type, she hasn’t let it hold her back. Liz worked for fifteen years as a stage manager, before getting involved in TV Drama. While working, she wrote her first novel in the evenings and weekends over the course of six years. That novel, Unravelling Oliver, went on to be a Number 1 bestseller, winning Liz critical and popular acclaim, as well as numerous awards. Her second award-winning novel Lying in Wait, made her name in the UK. Liz is fascinated by the psychology of people’s motivation. She wants to know what makes people tick. She writes dark characters that do terrible things, and then sets out to find the reasons for their actions. Her third novel Skin Deep won two An Post Irish Book Awards 2018: Irish Independent Crime Fiction Book of the Year and RTÉ Radio 1's The Ryan Tubridy Show Listeners’ Choice Award.</image:title>

<image:title>A Woman's Work Project - Mary Enright, Goldsmith & Jewellery Designer - Jewellery Designer and Master Goldsmith Mary Enright has almost two decades experience in the jewellery industry, both as designer and business owner. The success of her boutique style jewellery gallery and workshop in Kinsale, Ireland brought her much critical acclaim both nationally and internationally which led to a successful solo exhibition in New York in 2016. Shortly thereafter Mary relocated to the US where she now designs, creates and sells her work exclusively to private clients. Originally from Glin in Co. Limerick, Mary trained as a goldsmith in both Cork and Kilkenny. A very creative person by nature, Mary gets immense satisfaction from seeing something tangible evolve from a simple idea. She enjoys the solitary nature of her work, finding it incredibly therapeutic to get completely lost in the piece she is creating. People bestow sentiment, meaning, emotion and memories on each piece of jewellery. For Mary, it is magical to know a work she creates can hold all of these elements. When she’s not working, she’s Moll, Moa, May and sometimes Nancy depending on whether she is being a daughter, sister, aunt or friend. Follow your heart, trust your instincts, and chase your dreams. You have an amazing journey ahead of you, enjoy it!</image:title>

<image:title>A Woman's Work Project - Kara Manley, Engineer - Kara grew up as part of a big family in rural Co. Mayo. After her third-level studies at University College Dublin, she went travelling to Australia, got a job in an engineering office and didn't come home for ten years. While there, Kara worked as Project Manager on railroad contracts, which in turn led to her work in engineering. When her first child was turning four, she wanted him to go to school in Ireland, so she came back home. It was also important to her to be closer to family. Though Kara loves her challenging and interesting career, working in such a traditionally male environment isn’t always easy. Only recently she had a workplace visitor request that she make his coffee ‘like a good girl’. For Kara, the only answer is to rise above it and work that bit harder. In her job, she says, she has to be a tough cookie so she doesn’t get walked over, but at home, with her kids, she’s a big softie. My greatest achievement in life is my family. Having kids is probably the toughest battle I’ve faced, but everything I do is for them.</image:title>

<image:title>A Woman's Work Project - Josephine Guedan, Violin Maker - Josephine was born in France and has always loved working with her hands. As a child, she used to build models of famous buildings out of cardboard and wood. She also played the violin from an early age. Studying the craft of violin-making and restoration seemed like the perfect combination of her two hobbies. After finishing school, Josephine went to study violin-making in England. She then spent some time in the USA and Canada, until finally moving to Ireland with her family in 2007. She set up her own business in Bandon, in West Cork. Josephine always knew that she didn’t want to end up working in an office job. Her heart lay in a career with more emphasis on manual and technical work. Josephine is hugely proud of having guided her business through the economic downturn, and faces the challenges that come with being self-employed head-on. Being a strong woman means being independent and capable in all sort of ways. It means being there for my family when needed but still being able to have a professional life.</image:title>

<image:title>A Woman's Work Project - Jen Kelly, Industrial Abseiler - Industrial abseiling, also known as rope access, is a relatively new trade, established in the 1980s. Workers use abseiling techniques to access difficult-to-reach locations like bridges, dams, wind turbines, towers, skyscrapers and industrial plants, without the use of scaffolding or aerial work platforms. It’s a male-dominated trade – women make up less than 2% of industrial abseilers worldwide (it’s a bit better in Germany, 3.7%). It’s physically demanding work but nothing women can’t do; perception is all. Jen Kelly found her way to industrial abseiling after working in Melbourne Women’s Circus, where, she says, “it wasn’t just women performing, but women doing all the tech work, rigging, everything. It blew my mind.” After moving to Ireland, she found there was no specific organisation for women in the manual trades, so she set up the social enterprise, Women in Trades Network Ireland (WITNI.ie) “to promote tradeswomen online and at events, tell stories about them, introduce our local role models, and ‘bridge the gap’ by working alongside industry and employers to improve their reach to female applicants.”</image:title>

<image:title>A Woman's Work Project - Jaro Waldeck, Cinematographer - Jaro’s first camera was a compact Kodak bought with money she earned from a summer job. At the age eighteen she emigrated from her small town in the Czech Republic, first to the UK, then on to the US where she took English language classes, and worked as an Au Pair. A family she worked for suggested that she study photography and when she was accepted by a college, she was thrilled. Nobody in her family had studied at third level. Jaro realised her true passion lay in cinematography. After ten years in the US, she moved back to the Czech Republic to study for her Masters in Cinematography. Then, inspired by the simplicity and honesty of the film Once, she moved to Ireland, hoping to get an opportunity to work with some of the film’s creative team. Very quickly, she was embraced by the Irish film community, making successful music videos and shorts. Nowadays she is one of the best cinematographers in Ireland. Her award winning films are being screened at festivals internationally. Globally, the role of cinematographer (or director of photography) is so male-dominated that it’s one of the few jobs on a film set still stuck with a gendered title - ‘cameraman’ is as persistent as ‘best boy’ - and the Oscar category for camerawork, cinematography, has been called the toughest Oscar ceiling to crack. There were no female members of the American Society of Cinematographers until 1980, and 2018 is the first year ever that a woman was nominated for an Oscar in cinematography - Rachel Morrisson for Mudbound.</image:title>

<image:title>A Woman's Work Project - Evelyn Glennie, Solo Percussionist - Dame Evelyn Elizabeth Ann Glennie is a worldly renowned percussionist. She became profoundly deaf at the age of 12. She performs with a wide variety of orchestras and contemporary musicians, giving over 100 concerts a year as well as master classes and "music in schools" performances. Evelyn has collaborated with Björk's, Steve Hackett, Bela Fleck, Bobby McFerrin, Fred Frith, Mark Knopfler or The King's Singers to name but a few. Born and raised in Aberdeenshire in Scotland, to a family with a rich musical heritage, Evelyn had started playing the piano when she first began to lose her hearing, aged only eight. When she lost her hearing she discovered percussion, and realized she was, in fact, a sound creator first and foremost, then a musician, then a percussionist. From that realization, the notion of opening up the body like a huge ear became the key for her to digesting sound. It helped her to truly learn how to listen with her whole body. As a performer at an international level, her deafness does not inhibit her ability to perform. She regularly plays barefoot during both live performances and studio recordings since it helps her to feel the music better. Life is my inspiration. As an artist one has to observe and it’s often the tiniest or most mundane things that suddenly become interesting. In many ways we have to make the ordinary extraordinary.</image:title>

In 2019 she made history as Oscars' first ever female conductor. To become a conductor she studied anything vaguely music-shaped she could find. Now based in California, Eímear has carved out a successful career as a conductor of video game scores, both in the studio and the concert hall. The game music she conducts has unparalleled reach in the orchestral world. Diablo III smashed the record in game sales by selling over 3.5 million copies in the first 24 hours alone. <image:title>A Woman's Work Project - Claire Nolan, Project Architect - Over fourteen years ago, Claire was diagnosed with epilepsy. All the experts told her she would never get a college degree, never become an architect, never travel, or live away from home. Claire was devastated, and for a brief period of time she could see the future she dreamed of slip out of her hands. But then her stubborn streak kicked in. Claire knew she could not live a life surrounded by what-ifs. Determined to succeed against the odds, in 2011 she graduated with an honours Architecture degree. Unfortunately, graduating in 2011 also meant graduating in the midst of the recession. After a number of unpaid internships, in 2013 Claire returned to DIT to study for her Professional Diploma in Architectural Practice (Distinction) becoming a fully qualified architect in November of that year. Since then she has worked with two of the top firms in the country on high profile jobs in Dublin and throughout Ireland. Claire is also a very talented and successful landscape photographer. <image:title>A Woman's Work Project - April Cronin, Chess Player - The Queen’s Gambit show on Netflix in 2020 captivated audience worldwide. But only well-informed chess community knows that Ireland has its own female chess champion. April received her first chess set when she was eight years old. In 1972, she bought a book about the famous Fischer-Spassky chess match and took it with her on a family holiday to the West of Ireland. One rainy afternoon, a French gentleman, also on holiday there, asked April to join him for a game of chess. Afterwards, he suggested to her parents that she join a chess club. A room full of smoke and middle-aged men all playing chess made April feel as though she had died and gone to heaven. She went on to represent Ireland in the World Chess Olympiads, ranking as Ireland’s top female player throughout the 1980’s. Before retirement she has worked as a Primary School Principal. She still coaches her school’s chess team, and the next generation of Chess Champions. I'm not always as calm as I look. Being (or appearing to be) laid-back is hard work. But I learned to fake it over the chessboard: when I had just made a bad move or knew my position was difficult, I kept a calm "chess face" - nearly as good as a poker face.</image:title>

A trained upholsterer and a single mother, she also worked on theatre set design, and construction, before eventually starting her own upholstery business. Mia loves the joy she gets from her work; to transform and rejuvenate something old is both rewarding and satisfying every time, not to mention therapeutic. She relishes each chance to bring an old ragged piece of furniture back to new life. The combination of “hands on” physical work as well as the more creative attention to detail that upholstery requires, provides the perfect combination. As a camerawoman for RTÉ, Ireland’s National Broadcaster, Únaworks on a range of projects across various genres. <image:title>A Woman's Work Project - Thelma Watters, Garda Inspector - Thelma Watters started taking Business Studies at college and she worked briefly in Human Resource Management, but it was not for her. Instead she applied for An Garda Síochána, and started her first post in Limerick city in 2001. From there, she moved her way up through the ranks. She quickly joined the Detective Unit, investigating gangland crime. By 2016 Thelma was promoted to Garda Inspector, and is now attached to the Blanchardstown Garda district in Dublin. In work she has helped people through their toughest, darkest days. Though she has seen pretty much everything, she doesn’t let it harden her. A working mother of three children, she doesn’t have much time left for hobbies, but she always makes the most of family time. Her parents’ hard work and dedication to managing a family developed Thelma’s wish to help people from a young age. Making a change to somebody’s circumstances doesn’t always have to come from frontline services. Even a small contribution can make a massive impact on someone’s life. The first women joined An Garda Siochána in 1959 and today over 26% of gardaí are women; the numbers of inspectors, superintendents and sergeants have doubled since 2006. The UK has a similar percentage of women officers, 29%, but the US now falls well behind with under 12%.</image:title>

<image:title>A Woman's Work Project - Rosemary Smith, Rally Driver - Rosemary Smith is a phenomenally successful rally driver. In school, the nuns who taught Rosemary told her father she was stupid. Rosemary knew they meant that she had no interest in learning. To this day, if she isn’t a hundred percent interested in something, her tendency is to switch off. The one thing Rosemary was always good at was dress designing. She went to study design in the Grafton Academy. One of her first clients was an amateur rally driver. Rosemary already had a huge interest in rally driving, as her father was a rally driver. When her client asked Rosemary if she’d accompany her on a rally, Rosemary didn’t hesitate in saying yes. Together the duo began to win races and get noticed. Rosemary was approached by the Rootes Group, the well known British car manufacturer, to be their works driver. From there began a phenomenally successful career. Her highlights include the rallies of Monte Carlo, the Circuit of Ireland, the Safari, London-Mexico, and the 17000kmLondon-Sydney rally. The number of women rally drivers working today remains vanishingly small. This makes Rosemary Smith’s achievements all the more impressive</image:title>

<image:title>A Woman's Work Project - Susan McKenna Lawlor, Astrophysicist - Astrophysics applies the laws of physics and chemistry to explain the birth, life and death of stars, planets, galaxies, nebulae and other objects in the universe. Astrophysicists study the fun stuff: the properties of dark matter, dark energy and black holes, and whether time travel is possible or wormholes can form. Women account for just 10-15% of astrophysicists globally, but a trailblazer is Irishwoman Jocelyn Bell Burnell. As a research student in Cambridge in 1967, she detected unusual radio pulses coming from outside the solar system and identified them as emanating from rapidly spinning, super-dense, collapsed stars, subsequently named ‘pulsars’. One of the most significant astronomical discoveries of the 20th century, it won her (male) Cambridge superiors the 1974 Nobel Prize for Physics. Bell Burnell wasn’t cited – she featured on Scientific American’s 2008 list of ‘Top 10 Nobel Snubs’ - but her other international awards, including a DBE, are substantial. Susan McKenna Lawlor is another role model: in 1985 she set up Space Technology Ireland (STIL), a high-tech company building instrumentation and subsystems for space missions. STIL designed the onboard electrical support system processor unit for the Rosetta spacecraft, which in 2004 performed the first successful landing on a comet.</image:title>

<image:title>A Woman's Work Project - Teresa Hudson, Firefighter Paramedic - ‘Fireman’ was an accurate term until the First and Second World Wars when in the UK and Germany, women replaced enlisted men, but it wasn’t until 1978 that women were formally accepted into the UK fire service and 1982 before Britain had its first full-time female firefighter. In Ireland the first two women in Dublin Fire Brigade started in 1994, and today women make up just 5% of the Brigade. Being a Firefighter Paramedic is a diverse role. No two days are the same. Teresa loves both the challenge of the work, and also the complete unpredictability that each shift brings. Although it can be gruelling; both physically and emotionally, nothing beats the feeling of knowing she has helped bring a life into the world or saved one from leaving. Teresa describes her mother as her role model in life. Although they have very different personalities and clash a lot, she is grateful to have such a strong, caring individual as her mam. Her mother has supported Teresa at every turn. Face everything head-on, take responsibility for yourself and your actions, don’t be afraid to admit when you’re wrong, own your emotions and most of all believe in yourself.</image:title>

<image:title>A Woman's Work Project - Trish Long, General Manager, Disney Ireland - Trish began her career in pirate radio. Along the way, she spent time working at The Belltable, the Limerick Rape Crisis Centre, and the Irish Film Centre. As General Manager of Disney in Ireland, Trish loves to see a new project come to life. Her present role combines core responsibility for WDSMP in Ireland, overseeing all aspects of the distribution and marketing campaigns in the country for the entire theatrical slate including Walt Disney Animation Studios; Disney live action; Pixar; Marvel & Lucas Films. Each new production transports the audience, and over time that show’s characters become a part of the audience’s world. It is a special, almost tangible alchemy, that never fails to remind her – this is why we do what we do. Trish’s work is an important part of her identity and her sense of who she is. It can be all-consuming, and it touches every aspect of her life, being equal parts creative and commercial, both satisfying and challenging. Trish is also passionate about mentoring; harnessing her own knowledge, wisdom, and contacts for the benefit of others. To see her protégés grow and develop as they tackle their demons – and to sometimes be lucky enough to see them soar – is both powerful and wonderful. I truly believe that if you are lucky enough to figure out what you love to do and find a way to make that your life’s work, you really never work a day in your life.</image:title>

<image:title>A Woman's Work Project - Nicola O’Connor, Veterinary Surgeon - Nicola graduated from the School of Veterinary Medicine in UCD. Veterinary Science has experienced a dramatic turnaround in gender balance in recent years, more than any other profession in Ireland, with the percentage of female graduates rising from 34% in 1975 to 75% today. This is despite the fact that, as Nicola O’Connor says “Veterinary Medicine generally means long, unsociable hours, including weekend and night work, which makes family time extremely precious.” Like all female vets today, Nicola - who works for Turf Ireland, the regulatory body for horseracing – owes much to pioneer Aleen Cust, the first woman to be recognised by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) in the UK and Ireland. In 1896 Cust enrolled in veterinary school in Edinburgh under the gender neutral name, A.I. Custance. She completed her studies top of her class but was denied permission to sit the final exam and graduate. Nevertheless she began working as a vet in Co. Roscommon and was taken on by Galway County Council - carrying out her duties under an amended title since she didn’t have RCVS accreditation. In World War I she volunteered at the Front, looking after horses.</image:title>

In the United States, 12% of pilot students are women, and 10-12% of Aer Lingus pilots are women. Nicky always had an interest in aircraft and flying as a child. She knew when she finished school that she wanted to be a pilot. After finishing university, Nicky began her flight training in Dublin and completed her private pilot’s licence. Shortly afterwards, she qualified for a cadetship programme with Aer Lingus. Within two years, Nicky began flying as a First Officer on the Airbus 320 and 321. Currently she is a transatlantic pilot for flying to destinations like, Chicago, San Francisco and New York and still loving every minute of the job. <image:title>A Woman's Work Project - Marie Mulhall, Mechanic - Marie has been working with cars since she was seventeen. Even when she was a little girl, she often helped her father repairing cars and bikes. He wasn’t a trained mechanic but liked to work on all kinds of vehicles. She particularly remembers him being able to turn a bike from a bare frame to a beautiful-looking machine. When she finished school and began her career as a mechanic, it never occurred to Marie that it would be a big deal, or that people would make assumptions about her when they saw her in overalls with dirty hands. It was simple. She wanted to learn more about something that fascinated her – engines. She also wanted to make her father proud. Getting a paid apprenticeship was just a bonus. Women are more than capable of being taught any trade or profession we choose. <image:title>A Woman's Work Project - Julie Dupouy, Sommelier - Julie has a very impressive resume. She is a freelance Sommelier, co-creator of SommNinja Educational mobile application, EXSTO Cognac Consultant, Deputy Secretary General of the International Sommelier Association (ASI) and President of the Irish Guild of Sommeliers. Sommeliers stock the wine cellars in restaurants and advise customers on wine choices and food pairings. The profession originated in France where the world’s first union for sommeliers was founded in 1907. Getting to the top of your game in this career is almost ludicrously hard – the pass rate for the test held by the international examining body, the Court of Master Sommeliers, is between 3 and 8%, and there are only 236 master sommeliers worldwide, of whom just 32 are women. Julie Dupouy is a trailblazer: the first woman to reach the final of the Association de la Sommellerie (ASI) world championships in 2016, where she came third. In this competition, held every three years, contestants go through rigorous tests, including blind tastings and matching drinks to various menus. Dupouy, who works in the Greenhouse Restaurant in Dublin, describes herself as fascinated by aromas – “I originally wanted to work in the perfume industry; then on my 16th birthday my granddad opened a bottle of wine of my year of birth and I was amazed by the fact that wine could age like this and could be so unique aromatically.”</image:title>

<image:title>A Woman's Work Project - Gunvor Anhoj, Artist Blacksmith - Originally from Denmark, Gunvor runs a forge in Ireland with her Irish husband. From an early age, she had an urge to create, from carving simple wooden objects as a child, to constructing shelters to stay in overnight as a teenager. Working as a trained blacksmith allows her to still indulge these early passions, albeit in a slightly more grown-up manner. Through her work Gunvor gets to engage in primitive activities like lighting fires andhammering. She focuses largely on artistic metal sculpting, as the more utilitarian side of blacksmithing has been taken over by computer-aided design and 3D printing. In 2016, Gunvor was commissioned to create trophies which were presented to some of the people behind the Northern Irish Peace Process and the Good Friday Agreement. Hugely proud of this achievement on a personal level, she also feels a sense of pride in the craft - to bring it to such a prestigious event - and in the level of finesse, to make an ancient skill contemporary. She has to think on her feet, and be able to communicate with a broad range of people. Her favourite part of the day is when she gets tohelp people, be they employees, or customers. The most rewarding part of her job in 2016 was being part of the Dublin Bus Recruitment Day for Women. This initiative was a great success. <image:title>A Woman's Work Project - Emily O’Callaghan, Cobbler - Emily was working on a photography project about the people of Rathmines when she came across Cleggs, the local shoe repair shop. Intrigued, she asked the owner, William, for an apprenticeship. A master cobbler, from a family of cobblers, he taught her the art of the job. Working with her hands was hugely satisfying for Emily as it meant using an entirely different part of her brain. However during her apprenticeship she discovered she was allergic to traditional shoe glues, and could not continue her trade. Emily has had to leave cobbling aside. She is now working as freelance filmmaker and community support worker. Emily aspires to the qualities she sees in her mother; being patient, wise, kind and hard working. Being a strong woman means being there for others as well as for yourself, supporting other women and not putting them down or seeing them as competition. It means recognising the value of fighting for equality.</image:title>

<image:title>A Woman's Work Project - Eleanor Swan, Ceramic Artist - Eleanor is a ceramic artist working from her studio at Russborough House since 2011. When Eleanor left school in the 1970’s, she was told it wasn’t possible to go to art college. Instead she had to get a proper job. After training as a nurse in Dublin’s Mater Hospital, Eleanor worked in a hospital in Germany, before returning to the Mater to gain a Theatre Nursing qualification. She subsequently got a job in Temple Street Hospital, and ended up running the hospital’s emergency theatre. But, in all that time Eleanor was always involved in some way with the art world. At the age of 42 she decided she was going to start over. She applied to the National College of Art and Design, graduating a few years later with her Masters degree in Ceramic Design. Eleanor exhibits her work nationally, and internationally, and has a collection of ‘tactile’ pieces on permanent display in the Yingge Ceramic Museum in Taiwan. In 2016, I exhibited at the Taiwan Ceramics Biennale, winning a bronze medal. Her ceramic practice covers a variety of issues, from a current social commentary to an exploration of ceramics for our senses. For Eleanor, clay provides endless possibilities to explore how we exist, react and live in our world today. Being a strong woman is not something I set out to be. It’s just who I am. I think it comes from having a natural curiosity about everything, being adventurous and not afraid to take a risk. I was never afraid of failure. I think being strong is being able to be very free. And that is very liberating.</image:title>

Bradley was Britain’s top horsewoman, until her life was tragically cut short in 1983 when she was only 37. Already riding race horses, this had a profound effect on Caroline. She was inspired to move into showjumping herself, and from there to eventing. Four years ago, she fell off her horse and suffered a serious head injury. As a result of that accident, Caroline doesn’t jump anymore, though she remains very much involved in the equine world, running large stables in Kildare with her husband Gordon. Eventually, she got the confidence to give it all up and pursue her true passion, design. Now she works with felt to create handmade fashion accessories which are sold worldwide. From birth, Niki has had limited use in her right hand, so it’s not a coincidence that all of the garments she creates are designed to be opened and closed with only one hand. People are her inspiration. Her work is her way of creating stories, and her outlet to share her ideas and views. It is also an engine for lifelong learning, for creating and overcoming challenges. Working with wool has its own kind of magic. Wool has its own plasticity, it is both malleable and strong. It can be shaped into any form and function. Since returning home, she has set up her own workshop. Suzanne is Suzanne is driven by passion for the symmetry and elegance of period buildings and their furniture. She loves the materials used and the manual skills that made them. She is fascinated by the stories behind the pieces she is restoring; who sat on this sofa, or ate off this table? What monkey ran up the tree from which these mahogany doors were carved? Nature, colors, patterns and decorative details in period houses inspire her. They make her want to be better at what she does. Suzanne’s work is deeply personal, each piece she restores or creates means something to somebody. She leads a large team of scientists who research different aspects of Motor Neurone Disease. Orla is also the Academic Director of Trinity Biomedical Sciences Institute, where over 500 biological science researchers work together making new and exciting discoveries that will change how we live. In her career, she knows how difficult it can be for women working in traditionally masculine environments. She believes that any aspect of our society which is heavily biased towards one gender tends to make it difficult for the other. Just as there are traditionally masculine fields, there are many professions that are heavily feminised, like teaching, or nursing, in which it can be just as difficult for young men to find their identity. On top of all her career achievements, she is a mother to four young adults, two cats and a dog. Her inspiration comes from the patients she sees in her clinics, and conversations with the incredibly bright young people who work with her. Her passions are for life and living. <image:title>A Woman's Work Project - Laura Kennedy, Prison Officer - Laura was twenty-two years old, and saving for a trip to Australia when she saw a job advertised for prison officers. With a head full of dreadlocks, she never thought she’d be successful. Laura was shocked when she was accepted. Her job involves dealing with many different types of people, services and sectors: the Gardai, the Courts, Probation and Welfare services. Dealing with so many different personalities on a daily basis can be challenging, but it’s also what makes the job interesting. The early 19th century English penal reformer, Elizabeth Fry, argued that male and female prisoners should be kept in separate quarters, and that female prisoners should have female wardens. She influenced the establishment of Grangegorman penitentiary for women in Dublin in 1836, the first prison for female inmates in the British Isles and the first to have female wardens. Initially women wardens only served in female prisons, but nowadays women can now supervise both male and female inmates. “We are only human and I try to treat people as I would like to be treated”, says Laura Kennedy. Prison officer remains a minority profession for women – in Ireland just one in ten prison officers is female. That’s something the Irish Prison Service is trying to address – February 2018 saw the launch of a large-scale recruitment drive for more women and ethnic minorities.</image:title>

      <image:title>A Woman's Work Project - Stephanie Roche, Footballer</image:title>
<image:caption>When Stephanie was younger, her Dad and two brothers were very involved in football - both as coaches and players. She always went to their matches, playing in the goals before the games and at half-time. Stephanie has represented Ireland in football since she first made the national Under-17 team, aged 14. She is now in the national team, having also played for Sunderland Ladies. Women’s association football, or women’s soccer, is the most prominent team’s sport played by women around the globe, with 176 countries participating internationally. The first recorded women’s matches took place in the UK in the 1890s, and women’s football became very popular there during World War I. Unfortunately in 1921 the Football Association (FA) outlawed the playing of the women’s game on FA pitches, claiming it was distasteful. It took 50 years for the ban to be lifted. Women’s professional football got underway globally in the 1970s and ‘80s, with Italy becoming the first country with (part-time) professional women footballers and Japan the first to launch a semi-professional women’s football league in 1989. Women’s Football Association of Ireland was established in 1973 and made their competitive debut in 1984. S In 2013 Stephanie scored a goal for Peamount United that was runner-up for the FIFA best goal of the year.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Elaine loves working outside. Her favourite machine is her new Holland tractor T8040 and cultivator. Knowing first-hand how difficult farming is as a sustainable livelihood, Elaine is passionate about the treatment of farmers in Ireland. ‘If I asked you to go to work every day, every week, but told you I could not guarantee you would be paid, that in fact, you might lose money, would you go to work? Every day, this is what farmers in Ireland face.’ Elaine is married and has one son. Her family work all year round (often 14 hour days including weekends and holidays. Every year, planting crops in autumn feels like rolling a dice. There is never a guarantee they will break-even, never mind make any profit. Although she is aware of the hardships involved in farming life, Elaine wouldn’t do anything else. Her idea of heaven is sitting into the tractor in the morning with 100 acres of work in front of her, the radio for company, and the smell of freshly worked soil in the air.</image:caption>

<image:title>A Woman's Work Project - Joanne Buckley, Farmer - In 2015, Joanne was Runner-up at the Innovation On-Farm category at the FBD Women & Agriculture Awards. She was reared on a farm, and loved the way of life she grew up with. It was what she knew best, and she could never see herself doing anything else. While the freedom of being her own boss was appealing, being self-employed has its own challenges, as does working seven days a week, every week of the year. Joanne became more and more aware of how farming as a way of life had changed, until it dawned on her that it was no longer what she wanted to do for the rest of her life. Apart from her obsession with shoes, her dream has always been to live a long, happy, healthy and interesting life. With that in mind, Joanne decided to take a break from the farm in 2017 and to travel the world for as long as she can, and cherish every minute of it.</image:title>

<image:title>A Woman's Work Project - Róisín de Buitléar, Glass Artist - Róisín is an internationally renowned artist working in large scale glass installation and sculpture since 1982. She studied Glass Design at the National College of Art and Design, Dublin, where she later taught for two decades in tandem with her professional practice. Spanning sculpture, design, architecture and sound, her artwork is represented in national and public collections in Ireland, Britain, Japan, China and the USA. She was Invited Artist In Residence at the National Museum of Ireland in 2018 and since 2020 she is holding a position of the Chair of the Glass Society of Ireland. For her, the alchemic qualities of glass are a constant fascination. She strives to capture the qualities of glass, both as a molten syrup and as a hard material, reflecting and refracting light shadows. Róisín is also inspired by both of her parents, noble guardians of our culture and community. Her practice focuses on culture, identity and legacy. The characteristics of our narrative traditions are central to her work. Made up of multiple layers of meaning, her work comes from very deep within her soul. <image:title>A Woman's Work Project - Polly Donnellan, Welder - Traditionally, welding was a man’s job but during World War II, women were recruited to meet the shortfall – in 1943 in the USA, women accounted for half of the welding workforce. But after the war, numbers fell off again. In 1980, having completed a machine operator and a welding course, Polly Donnellan took a job in Digital Machines Ireland in Cork – she was the only woman on the shop floor. The following year she became the first woman in Ireland to pass the standard pipe welding exam: “I wanted to prove to myself I could do it”. Polly also hoped it would open up more work opportunities for her. She had already done a basic welding course, and was confident in her ability, so this was the obvious next step. She remains in a small minority of women in the job: globally only 5 percent of welders are women. Polly says that while she likes traditionally female things, she also loves machines, engines, and tools. She enjoys a challenge. She appreciates the inherent beauty in her work. There’s something magical about seeing the shiny folds of molten metal falling away from the end of the rod, and the slag coming off in one piece when it is chipped at with a hammer. Polly loves working with her hands and being creative.</image:title>

<image:title>A Woman's Work Project - Kathryn Brown, Truck Driver - Kathryn grew up on a farm, and was driving tractors from the age of six. Although Agricultural College seemed like a natural step, she still wasn’t sure if farming was what she wanted to do for the rest of her life. Kathryn got married at twenty-one, and had three children within three years. She spent the next twenty years juggling family and work as a chef, until her ‘midlife crisis’ hit and she realised that she needed a change of career. In 2015, Kathryn applied for her truck licence, hung up her apron, and hasn’t looked back since. In the UK and Ireland today just over 1% of drivers of heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) are women. That rises to almost 6% in the US, still less than three in fifty. With long nights on the road, the hours aren’t family-friendly, and the seating and controls in HGVs are designed around male stature. But that doesn’t put some women off. For Kathryn Brown, as for all dedicated truckers, it’s about “love of driving, regardless of the weather,” and the freedom of the open road. In 2016 a Twitter poll, carried out by the Freight Transport Association, revealed that 79% of women would like to get behind the wheel of a truck.</image:title>

When she was fourteen, she left school and trained as a Fibre Optic and Data Cabling Technician. With a lot of hard work and determination, Lena worked her way up the ranks to her current position as Contracts Manager for a network telecommunications company. She is responsible for sixteen employees, all of whom are men. “When it comes to my work I am very conscientious and a bit of a perfectionist. I expect the same from my all-male team who report to me directly. I believe if you undertake a task or job, whether it be small or substantial, it should be done correctly using the correct procedures.” Lena firmly believes that every job, whether small or substantial, should be done correctly using the correct procedures. <image:title>A Woman's Work Project - Nora Khaldi, Mathematician and Chief Scientist</image:title>
<image:caption>With a mixed background of Irish, French and North African decent, Dr. Nora Khaldi is an award-winning speaker and well-published mathematician and scientist. She loves solving complicated problems and working on the edge of scientific discovery. Her innovative ideas and inventions have been recognized by the likes of the EU Commission, WIRED, TEDx and Forbes. In 2014, Nora founded Nuritas, the first company in the world to introduce artificial intelligence (AI) and DNA analysis to the food arena. Her goal is to find specific molecules in food that can be used to prevent and cure diseases such as Diabetes. With a PhD from Trinity College Dublin in molecular evolution and bioinformatics, Khaldi insists that “Achievements are relative; I set goals every month and once something is achieved it’s quickly replaced with another goal. In science there's always the next problem to solve.” A quarter of people working in Ireland’s STEM [science, technology, engineering and maths] industries are women. That’s about the same as in the US, but less than the EU-28 where the figure is between 32% (for those employed in high-tech, knowledge-intensive industries) and 40% (for scientists and engineers generally). When it comes to starting their own business (in any sector), women in Ireland are more likely to do this than the EU average, but still less likely than men in Ireland. All of which makes Norah Khaldi’s achievement exceptional.</image:caption>

Using the same skill and creativity that she did in her earlier career, she created what has been described as an ‘excitingly contemporary garden’. Situated around her home in the townland of Tinode, June’s garden spreads over three acres. According to Shirley Lanigan’s The 100 Best Gardens in Ireland, ‘June is one of the best plantswomen in the country. <image:title>A Woman's Work Project - Gill Massey, Funeral Director - Gill worked as Operations Manager for a medical company for fifteen years before she took redundancy and joined her family’s funeral undertaking business. Gill is often the first person a bereaved family will meet after the loss of a loved one. Being an undertaker can feel a lot like being a therapist. It requires a huge amount of compassion and empathy. Even though many of the situations families find themselves in might touch her personally, Gill has to remain professional at all times. In the beginning, she found the work difficult, but over the years she has discovered that being with people when they are at their most vulnerable, and helping them through the hardest days imaginable, is its own reward. Gill’s dream is to continue building a successful business, and to provide her children with opportunities for their future. Historically in many countries, including in Ireland, women looked after the dead – washing, dressing and anointing bodies, and waking and lamenting at the graveside. But the professionalisation of the death care industry, from the late 19th century onwards, saw men assuming the role of undertakers. In 1970 only 5% of funeral directors in the US were women, but this is now changing: around 43% of US funeral directors today are women and, more significantly, so are 60% of students in US mortuary science schools. White Lady Funerals – with only female directors - is Australia’s fastest growing network of funeral homes, and in the UK and Ireland, the number of women in the industry is increasing.</image:title>

<image:title>A Woman's Work Project - Bridget Spain, Church Minister - Bridget was born in Edenderry, Co. Offaly, and raised in a very traditional Catholic home. The religion she knew as a child involved a lot of fear, and instinctively she felt that fear as part of religion was wrong. As a teenager, Bridget distanced herself from the Catholic Church, and happily remained away from all religious practice for many years. She studied Commerce in University College Dublin, and later qualified as an accountant. Although she was a good accountant, she always felt it wasn’t her true calling. When she came to the Unitarian Church for the first time, she was looking for a community. Immediately she felt at home. In the Unitarian Church, members of the congregation take it in turns to lead the service. On hearing this, Bridget knew straight away this was what she wanted to do. In 2003 she began her studies for Ministry and did an Arts degree with the Open University. She became Assistant Minister to Rev. Bill Darlison in the Dublin Unitarian Church in 2007 and became full Minister in Dublin in 2010. Bridget is the first Irish person, and the first woman to hold her job.</image:title>

For her, the programmes she works on are a collaborative process, which allow her to bring her own ideas and creativity to every production. She relishes the fact that no two days are ever the same. <image:title>A Woman's Work Project - Glenda Powell, Fisherwoman - As a child, Glenda used to love watching her Uncle Michael tie flies made out of feather and fur to his fishing lines. She began fishing seriously at the age of nine when he died and left her his fishing rods. When she was eighteen, she told her father she was going fishing for the rest of her life. She was determined to work in fishing, teaching and being around an angling community. A qualified fly casting instructor, she went on to become a world champion, and is currently the chairperson of the professional Game Angling Instructors Association in Ireland. In her work, Glenda helps people learn to cast, to throw the line out across the water using the rod and reel, and also to relax and get away from their busy lives. Watching and listening to the river allows most people to calm down enough to experience the beauty around them. Glenda gets great pleasure watching someone go from not being able to cast to suddenly discovering that things are working for them. She especially enjoys seeing someone catch a fish; their reaction, being able to experience their joy, and be part of that moment.</image:title>

<image:title>A Woman's Work Project - Kellie Harrington, Boxer - Kellie has been boxing since the age of 16, and her dream is to one day represent Ireland at the Olympics. She won the gold medal in the lightweight division at the 2018 Women's World Boxing Championships and silver in the 2016 World Championships in Kazakhstan. However she won her medal in the 64kg light welterweight category, which is not yet an Olympic boxing weight classification for women. Kellie’s nearest category would be the 60kg, a weight that has been dominated by Katie Taylor. Training is hugely important to Kellie, and she dedicates a lot of time to it, fitting in two sessions a day. Kellie loves to fight, and loves the feeling that she gets between the ropes. She is equally passionate about her day job as a Personal Trainer, which keeps her grounded. Women’s boxing burst into the national consciousness in 2012 when it finally became an Olympic sport and Katie Taylor took gold to become the first ever Olympic female lightweight champion. But the sport has had a long chequered history, with women sparring in prize fights in London throughout the 18thcentury. However, for the next two centuries their participation in the sport was regarded as disgusting and immoral – the Amateur Boxing Association of England only lifted its 116 year ban on women in 1996.</image:title>

<image:title>A Woman's Work Project - Lisa Levins Burgess, Navigator, RNLI Lifeboat Service - The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) is a charity in the UK and Ireland which saves lives at sea. Founded in 1824, it has saved some 140,000 people, at a cost of more than 600 lives lost in service. In the early days of the RNLI, lifeboat launch and recovery was often undertaken by women, but it was considered bad luck for women to actually crew the boats. It was 1969 before the first female inshore crew member was appointed. Still today, over 90% of RNLI crew are male. Growing up in Clogherhead, one of Lisa’s earliest memories is of the local lifeboat. Every time it went out on a rescue, the lifeboat service set off maroons (a type of noisy flare) which could be heard all over the village. Her parents would drive down to the beach to watch the boat going out. Lisa always admired the crew and wanted to join for a long time, despite it being a very male-dominated job. In August 1995, one of the proudest days of her life came when she officially joined the crew. Twenty-one years later she’s one of the navigators, the trainee coxswain, and also the training co-ordinator for the station. Faced with saving lives on a daily basis, Lisa experienced her own tragic loss when her husband Steve passed away in December 2015. Because of his illness, they had planned to try IVF, and it succeeded first time. Lisa is grateful to have been able to raise Steve’s son Ethan.</image:title>

<image:caption>Danielle is the only female Michelin Star Chef in Ireland. She grew up on a farm in Mayobridge, Co Down. Her career began when she started washing pots in a local restaurant. After catering college, Dannielle trained for four years under Michael Deane, one of the leading figures in the Belfast restaurant scene. She travelled the world and trained under many experienced chefs. When Michael asked her to head up his new fine dining restaurant Eipic, she returned home. Within 18 months they were awarded a Michelin star, making her the only female Michelin-starred chef in Ireland. From Eipic in Belfast she moved on to open her own restaurant and then stepped into the role of head chef in Balloo House in Northern Ireland. One of Dannielle’s joys in her work is the thrill that comes from making people happy, seeing or hearing a restaurant full of all kinds of people, celebrating birthdays, anniversaries or even on first dates, and knowing that she is a part of it.</image:caption>

<image:title>A Woman's Work Project - Úna Kavanagh, Artist - Una is an embodiment of simply The Artist. She is best known as an actor in Ireland’s national soap opera, but her acting credits go far beyond TV. However, her heart lies in the art studio where she works alone creating sculpture and multimedia projects. Sculptor, writer, teacher, director and artistic collaborator… she does all this with professional grace and an incredible talent. She have studied with and inspirational teacher in Ballyfermot senior college and her portfolio was accepted to the National College of Art and Design where she moved straight into second year of a B.A. in craft design. “Once upon a time” is her largest exhibition to date and is the result of fifteen years work through a variety of mediums. Professional female sculptors were almost unknown until the 20th century. Exceptions include Camille Claudel in France, who produced magnificent bronzes in the 1890s before being confined to a mental asylum in 1913, and the Irish sculptor, Mary Redmond, who won an open competition in Dublin in 1890 to sculpt a statue of Fr Theobald Mathew, the so-called ‘apostle of temperance’, pioneer of the abstinence movement. Ironically enough, when the statue was nearing completion, Redmond’s model arrived drunk and she had to dismiss him. In revenge, he returned at night and smashed the statue. Nothing daunted, Redmond started again and her monumental sculpture was unveiled before a huge crowd on 8 February 1893; it remains in place in O’Connell Street today. In the 20th century many of the great names in Irish sculpture were women: Rosamund Praeger, Melanie Le Broquy, Hilary Heron, Alexandra Wejchart, Imogen Stuart, Dorothy Cross. Sculpture, once reserved to stone, wood or metal, is now very much a mixed media. For her large-scale installation #imonlyhuman, Una Kavanagh, who counts Camille Claudel as an influence, uses a range of materials from cast bronze to film projection.</image:title>
